Episode #73: How Creating a Passion Project Shifted Her Mindset

As mentioned recently, we’re switching the podcast up a bit to share the behind-the-scenes happenings here at Julie Kim Consulting.

If you don’t already know, I have a signature digital program called The Passion Project Bootcamp, with a lot of incredible students enrolled in it. I’ll be sharing the 1-on-1 coaching sessions I have with these students here on the podcast, to not only benefit each of them, but to also help you as the listener out as well.

Today’s call is with Sonya, a junior in high school whose passion project has instilled a sense of purpose and a mission in her.

Creating a passion project has not only created a standout factor for Sonya’s application, but she’s feeling so excited about it, which you’ll hear today in this conversation. She asks me some important questions around mindset, specifically how to not feel guilty when she doesn’t complete everything on her to-do list, as well as what she can do to stop comparing herself to others (and who hasn’t done this)!

We also look at how to incorporate passion projects into college essays, the way to get published in newspapers and magazines, and I even edit and make suggestions on the Profesor Outreach email that she is sending out to professors.

There is a lot of strategy and mindset tips packed into this episode!

NOTABLE QUOTES:

Your priority is your GPA. If you don’t have a good GPA, then it’s hard no matter what you do.
You have to sell your story, and your passion project will most likely be the climax of your story.
From now on in terms of mindset, I’m going to look at people as inspiration rather than it bringing myself down.
I really love talking about racial equality and things like that, because I’ve always cared about those things and I experienced them when I first came here. Merging those things I care about together was really invaluable to me.
